Imagine a month-long trip, all expenses paid, where you get pushed out of your comfort zone and into one of the harshest climates on the planet: Antarctica. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, dust off your mittens because Airbnb is making this a reality for five lucky people this November and December. The best part? UAE residents are eligible to apply!
The purpose of the trip is to help us better understand humans’ environmental impact. Don’t worry if you’re not a science major, no formal qualifications are required. What you do need are ‘an adventurous spirit, passion for the environment and willingness to apply’ according to Airbnb. You’ll also need to be available to travel for a month from November to December so your passport neds to be valid until July 1 2020, and be able to speak conversational English.
The successful applicants will first fly to Punta Arenas in Chile, where they will receive immersion training on glaciology and field sampling, as well as lab work and equipment practice. Once completed they will set off for Antarctica.
While in Antarctica, tasks will include collecting snow samples to study them for foreign microfibers to accurately deduce how far waste and pollution has travelled across the world. In their downtime they will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the South Pole, and explore sites such as the Drake Icefall, Charles Peak Windscoop, and Elephant’s Head.
When they return to Chile they will continue to study their findings and work with Ocean Conservancy to become ambassadors for protecting the oceans.
Applications can be done online and must be submitted by October 8. The chosen five volunteers will be announced on October 30.
