Our favourite female athlete, Serena Williams, who was chasing a record-equaling 24th career grand slam title at the US Open, suddenly sat sobbing in her chair before deciding to retire 19 minutes into the match due to back spasms this past Monday (August 12).
Serena emotionally told spectators "I'm sorry I couldn't do it today. I tried but I just couldn't do it.” "It's been a tough year but we'll keep going."
Her opponent, Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu consolidated an early break on Sunday to move 3-1 up at which point Williams went to her chair where she called for the trainer and broke down in tears. Bianca tried to comfort Serena by offering her a hug and the pair had a heartfelt conversation.
We love this display of women supporting women!!!
Bianca is familiar with this situation as she had to withdraw from the French Open with a shoulder injury.
"I feel for Serena so much. I've been through so much the last year with injury so I am so sorry she had to go out this way," the 19-year-old said during the trophy ceremony. “Sometimes, you can't push your body and she couldn't today and I wish her a fast recovery."
Serena Williams competitive action this year has been severely limited because of knee issues now has to recover from back spasms. Despite all these set-backs, Williams is not giving up. She still plans to compete in an upcoming match in Cincinnati.
Don’t give up girl! We’re all rooting for you!
