The stunning Australian actor totally made us rethink this beauty blast from the past!

Whenever anyone mentions blue mascara, I get cringe-worthy flashbacks to my nine-year-old-self, circa late ‘80s (totally showing my age) when my friends and I decided it would be cool to raid our mother’s make-up stashes, and pretty much apply EVERY. SINGLE. PRODUCT. Yes, that includes frosted pink lipstick too. Gotta love a beauty trend!

In case you didn’t know, blue mascara was big in the ‘80s. From models and movie stars to Sharron next door, I remember everyone giving it a go. More often than not, it was paired with hideously bright eyeshadow in matching blue hues. Thank goodness social media didn’t exist back then!

Since the ‘80s, blue mascara has made an appearance on the odd catwalk here and there, but let’s be honest, most of us avoid the stuff at all costs. Am I right?

And so, it came as quite the surprise when I recently spotted the gorgeous Margot Robbie sporting a black graphic eye look, with none other than a flash of BLUE mascara. And shock horror, I actually really liked it.

Margot Robbie rocks blue mascara on the red carpet

The reason the electric blue hue looks so good on Margot is because unless you look closely, or you just happen to be standing right next to her (we wish), you might not even notice it. It adds an element of surprise, in a really cool way.

Teamed with fresh skin and rosy cheeks, Margot’s black graphic eye look might otherwise be seen as a bit gothic (on to that ‘90s trend another time), but by applying a few coats of blue mascara, it kinda modernises the whole vibe, and I think the trick is – as demonstrated here – to apply it to the top lashes only. Why did no-one get that memo the first time around?

Convinced? Here are a few blue mascara options to add to cart now…
