TikTok is constantly coming up with new trends, whether it’s dances, fashion looks, sayings, manneurisms, or even DIY hacks. Some of our favourites include beauty trends that spread like wildfire throughout the app. Cool graphic liner looks? Check. ‘E-girl’ blushing cheeks? Check. The fox-eye trend (Alexa Demie inspired ofc,)? Check.

About a month ago, a slightly more interesting beauty trend began, and is still a heavily used ~ aesthetic ~ on TikTok. A cross between looking grunge-y or just simply not caring, the ‘dark under eye bag’ trend was born. And we have no one to thank but the amazing beauty guru’s on TikTok who have now made concealer look (basically) useless.

Content creator Sara-Marie Carstens (also known as @saramariecarstens on TikTok,) kicked off the trend by lip-syncing to viral audio, Greek Tragedy by The Wombats while drawing dark circles under her eyes with a beauty product.

Have a look for yourself…

We’re *so* here for it.

“I didn’t necessarily see this trend before, although there have been a few trends going around that include accentuating eyebags- such as the Femboy trend and the Tim Burton trend, I believe I’m the first one to really draw attention to eye bags and dark circles,” Sara-Marie told Cosmo ME. “I was actually just sitting in my room doing silly lip sync videos, like I always do on my second account (more serious and professional videos are posted on on my main), and spontaneously decided to pick up my lipstick and redraw my own dark circles – which I previously covered with concealer. I basically wanted to show everyone how “cool” dark circles can look! The long term goal is to NORMALIZE them and make people more confident in their natural ones.”

Sara filled us in on which beauty products she used as well. “I used Alverde Matt Lipstick in the shade 80 I believe, but you can really just grab any brownish-pinkish lipstick or eyeshadow and smear it along your natural eyebags/circles and blend that out to your liking! Or just rock your natural ones!”

The video became viral very quickly, garnering loads of attention from other MUA’s as well, but that is not what Sara expected at all. Apparently, there were many negative comments as some thought Sara made ‘their insecurities a trend.’ Which was obvs not the case.

Even ‘beauty guru wannabe’ Danielle Marcan recreated Sara’s lewk.

Danielle spoke to Cosmo ME about this viral beauty trend as well, saying she saw ‘some of her favourite creators’ try it out and she felt “very empowered to jump in and participate.”

“I’ve always loved changes and being able to define your own idea of beauty using makeup, and this TikTok trend was all about that. It just resonates with what I stand for and believe in,” she said.

She opted for a deep shade of Elf Flawless Brightening Concealer to emphasise her eye bags. And when questioned about whether or not she thinks this trend will stay Danielle stated, “remember when people were insecure about freckles? We managed to change our perspective regarding them a few years ago, and now we consider them a natural beautiful trait. I hope it will be the same with dark circles too.”

We hope so too!
