The stars were out in Los Angeles last night for the 96th Academy Awards. As the red carpet rolled out, viewers at home were quick to spot that the carpet wasn’t the only eye-catching red symbol of the night.
Celebrities including Billie Eilish, Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef were spotted wearing red pins on the carpet, as part of an effort launched by Artists4Ceasefire, a group of individuals in the entertainment industry who penned an open letter to Joe Biden to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.
The letter was signed by huge Hollywood stars including Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lopez.
The pins feature an orange hand with a black heart inside, surrounded by a red circle. It was also worn at the award show by Arab writer-director Kaouther Ben Hania, nominated for best documentary feature for Four Daughters. The Oscar-nominated director’s semi-documentary follows the anguish of Olfa Hamrouni, played by Hend Sabri, as her daughters become radicalized and run away to join Daesh in Libya.
