Enter Scarlet Scarab: Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight has welcomed its very first Egyptian superhero in the final episode “Gods and Monsters”. Can we give it up for Arab representation, folks? FYI: Mohamed Diab is also the director for the Marvel series.

So, who is Moon Knight’s Scarlet Scarab?

Since its premiere on March 30th, Moon Knight has been creating all the buzz and the ending of the mini-series has got us hooked more than ever. Layla El-Faouly, played by Bahraini-born, Egyptian-Palestinian actress May Calamawy, is ultimately unveiled as superhero Scarlet at the end of the popular series.

If you must know, Moon Knight‘s costume designer Meghan Kasperlik did a collab with May to come up with the costume. “I definitely collaborated with May. It was also important with our Egyptian director Mohamed Diab that it wasn’t this very stereotypical female action figure that was always wearing skin-tight clothing. Because in Egyptian culture, it is not always a positive thing to have skin-tight clothing on. I worked closely with May, and we needed to make her a badass but sporty,” said Meghan in an interview.

That’s not just it. The team also chose the character to have larger curly hair to be “very much representative of Egyptian culture”.
