Cosmo ME: Can you tell us a little about what The Skinny Confidential is?
Lauryn Bosstick: I launched The Skinny Confidential 13 years ago with the intention of it being a place to get the juice, get the skinny, get the details on everything in life. At the time when I launched, there were a lot of bloggers online. However, their content only focused on topics like what colour nail polish they were wearing or their outfit of the day.
I wanted to share these types of topics as well but what I did differently is that I included other people in my content. For example, beauty tips and tricks not just from me but from models, the everyday girl, and celebrities.

From there it grew into a space where you really find real reviews of products that women from all different walks of life they were using, as well as random things like the snacks they were eating to what kind of mocktails they were drinking. Today, The Skinny Confidential has turned into a podcast, two books, and a beauty and wellness morning routine line.
C: Did you ever think The Skinny Confidential to grow to the mega-brand that it is today?
L: Yes. I’m very intentional with how I visualize things and I think from the beginning I knew I was setting up to build a brand. It wasn’t about Lauryn Bosstick, instead, it was about building the brand of The Skinny Confidential and the community surrounding it.
I knew I would eventually expand The Skinny Confidential as a platform into a bunch of different outlets. I think if you’re out there building a brand, it is important to niche down onto one thing and then slowly grow outward into other things.
C: Can you tell us about your popular beauty tool, the Hot Mess Ice Roller?
L: In 2009, I had jaw surgery and was incredibly swollen. I discovered this cheap ice roller off Amazon to depuff my face. It totally worked wonders so I decided to create my own ice roller for The Skinny Confidential and I made sure it hit every pain point. My Hot Mess Ice Roller stays cold for a super long time. It’s silicone, it’s thick, and there’s a place to put your thumbs so you can apply pressure. My audience loves it.

C: We’re curious to know, are you from a family of entrepreneurs or has the desire to launch your own business something you’ve always had inside of you?
L: I’ve always been someone who wants to disrupt and push boundaries. I’m a classic oversharer and live life the way I see it. Both my parents were restaurateurs, and they both were very entrepreneurial. The shoe fits me, and it’s very comfortable for me to be able to beat to the tune of my own drum.
C: You also have your The Skinny Confidential Him and Her Podcast that you co-host along with your husband. What type of guests do you interview?
L: We’ve had our podcast for the past six years. It’s something we do eight times a month. Our podcast is like a bag of Chex Mix. You never know what you’re going to get. We’ve had all kinds of different people on our show, from reality stars from Real Housewives of Dallas star Tiffany Moon to former professional fighter, Adam Von Rothfelder.
C: What made you decide to launch a podcast?
L: Podcasting is such a unique platform because it’s not about aesthetics. It’s the only outlet in the world that saves the audience time. With Instagram you have to scroll, Instagram stories and YouTube need to be watched, and blogs and books must be read. A podcast essentially gives the audience their time back.
It’s such a great outlet because what you’re essentially selling is time. When I launched my podcast, I knew this is so incredible for my audience because they’re able to learn and consume as they want but also get their stuff done.
C: Before we wrap up, we want to mention that you have this amazing confident energy. Has this confidence always been within you or did you ever struggle with self-doubt or low self-worth?
L: I think confidence comes from keeping the promises that you make to yourself. If you make a commitment to yourself like I’m going to lose 20 pounds or I’m going run a marathon, but you don’t keep your own promise, that’s where insecurity lies.
The first step in the foundation of confidence is keeping the promises that you make to yourself and not to overwhelm yourself. I’ll set systems on my calendar to keep those promises and that builds inward confidence.
I also think that meditation is incredible for confidence. Through meditation, I’ve realized that you don’t need validation from anyone but yourself. I started meditating for two minutes a day and now I can do 30 minutes every single day.
Also, when I was little, my parents were very non-judgmental. They were very much like do whatever works for you, be the best version of whatever that is. When I was little confidence definitely came from them. I think as a parent now I’ll really try to instill that in my daughter.
