I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: it’s been a Very Big Year for the no-makeup selfie. And for the natural skin texture selfie. Not to mention the post-workout selfie.
Everyone’s done it. Ariana Grande’s done it. So has Gigi Hadid. And Ashley Benson. Oh, and not forgetting Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall (she threw her natural curls in for extra measure).
Adele practically broke the internet when she did it. Maura shared one of Molly-Mae, very much without Molly-Mae’s consent (though it went down a treat with all parties). Ashley Graham did it. Billie Eilish did it (and we all know that when Billie Eilish does something, it gets instant zeitgeist status.
Why do we have such appetite for this type of picture? Is it the golden ticket to seeing behind the veneer of filters and glam teams? Does it make us feel less alone as we sit, stained by noodle-juice, with latent acne and a founding fathers ponytail?
The point of the matter is, Bella Hadid just made her own contribution to the ‘keeping it real’ selfie trend, but as a word of warning – this won’t make you feel better about your founding fathers ponytail, so look away if you’re not ready to see what a global supermodel looks like after a cardio sesh. With zero makeup. Or filter. You’ve been warned.
Side-note: Bella, please, would it be possible to drop your skincare regime? The people* need it.
…*And by ‘the people’, I mean me. I need it.
Goddamn it, Bella.
