Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour was such a huge hit and also pretty short with eleven songs and a half-hour running time. It’s just a little morsel! So, what’s next?
Don’t forget, Rodrigo is pulling double (if not triple) duty as a songwriter, breakout pop artist and the star of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+. Season 3 is set to debut at some point in 2022 (it just started filming in January) and will feature songs from both Frozen and Camp Rock. That may have to be our Rodrigo fix while we wait for details about her next album. Honestly, I’m pretty excited… especially for the Camp Rock of it all. Give me ALL the Demi Lovato covers, please!!
I think it’s safe to assume that eventually, Rodrigo will release a second album. So here’s everything we know… or think we know.
WHEN WILL THE ALBUM BE RELEASED?
According to Teen Vogue, some Taylor Swiftian numerology theories surfaced that Rodrigo was going to release a secret second album in summer 2021. That obviously didn’t happen.
In a 2021 article for Nylon mag, an interviewer asked point-blank what’s next for her in the future, every high school graduate’s favourite question:
“My life is really great right now. It’s so awesome to do music, and feel seen in that way. I’m going to graduate high school soon, which is going to be fun. I’m so busy. We’ll get a cake or something.”
She’s also, you know, going on tour. The Sour Tour starts in April 2022 and ends in July 2022. Maybe she’ll debut some new songs on tour — Rodrigo did tell The Los Angeles Times in a December 2021 interview that she’s writing again, and if the five-ish Sour songs she wrote during HSMTMS Season 2 were any indication, she might actually get a lot of extracurricular songwriting done during Season 3 — but touring’s going to take up a lot of time.
That makes me feel like the album isn’t coming any time soon… unless, of course, she’s already secretly recorded the songs. It wouldn’t be the first time! We love a surprise album.

WHAT’S THE VIBE GOING TO BE?
Rodrigo told CLASH that her next LP, whenever and whatever it will be, is “probably going to be a lot happier than the record I just made.” She also mentioned St. Vincent and Jack White as dream collaborators and said that her “tastes are always changing, and […] that will be reflected in the next album.” Wait a minute… tastes?
IS IT REALLY GOING TO BE CALLED SWEET?
Where ever did you get that idea?? “I’m still kind of working on the rest of it,” Rodrigo said on Jimmy Kimmel Live in October 2021 when asked about the title theory. “It’s my little secret.” While Sweet and Sour feels like a natural pair — and her collab with Sour Patch Kids included the slogan “sour then sweet” — I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were y’all. That’s pretty much always been the candy’s M.O., and Rodrigo also pretty much told CLASH that Sweet was not the plan. Sorry, not sorry!
