April Marie has pretty much been the talk of the town ever since Netflix’s The Ultimatum premiered. With her honest takes throughout every episode and killer confidence, what’s not to love about the reality star?

Luckily, we got the chance to sit down with April Marie to talk about reality TV, current relationship, and life after The Ultimatum.

Here’s every burning question we asked April Marie…

Cosmo ME: How was your experience on The Ultimatum?

April Marie: It was a rollercoaster. Like a three month rollercoaster. It just never stopped. It was probably a really rocky time for me, I’ve never felt so rejected or in a competition with another female because Jake has never made me feel that way. So, you go on this reality TV show and you’re like boom, who is this person?

It was tough. It was like, week one, you already knew the downplay of all of that. You just kinda had to roll with it. It was really tough. I kinda knew where things were going for me early on in the experiment. It was, by all means, one of the greatest experiences in my life. I learned so much about not only what I needed in a partner and in a relationship but also how to be a better partner and a better person for myself.

All the things that April wanted and needed that I kind of neglected to make my relationship work. I’m thankful for the experience.

I think I walked out of there. Even though you guys saw me crying nonstop but I just walked out of there happy that I was going out to do things that I wanted to do. I was actually going out to places on my own in Austin to meet people because I didn’t know anyone here. It just felt very empowering to be okay with myself.

I was vulnerable and I went to like, I’m putting myself first. I’m not crying over you boys anymore.

C: Can you catch us up on your life post-The Ultimatum?

A: So, post The Ultimatum, I’ve moved in and currently living with my boyfriend of six months. He’s my absolute best friend and I completely adore him. It’s just been such a fun, exciting, and playful relationship. I’ve been really happy.

C: Is he someone you knew before you went to The Ultimatum or did you meet him afterwards?

A: I didn’t know anyone in Austin, truly. So, the first year living here, COVID hit. We didn’t meet anybody. So, really, I was living with Jake day in and day out, 24/7. Later, the show hit and I never explored Austin as much as I did with Colby for three weeks so I thought I can learn to love living here and try it out for another year without COVID and go out and explore.

Then, I’m just exploring and Colby would take me to different bars and we’d go to different restaurants. So, I was just like, I love this place. So I think towards the end of the finale, where I’m walking up the stairs in my red dress, I actually fell asleep on my bed crying and I just passed out on my bed crying.

They woke me up and I still had my heels and dress on and I just said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna go drive around Austin by myself’ at ten o’clock on a Saturday night. I drove through and I get up to the club and made some friends. I later ended up going home with one of those friends and she ended up being mutual friends with my current boyfriend.

She actually came over to my house and was like my boss is going through a breakup. You should follow him on Instagram and we both did. Finally, he asked me out on a date and we’ve just been travelling around the world together since.

C: So, we wanted to ask you some beauty questions. So, first and foremost, we need to talk about your hair. When did you colour it?

A: I’m gonna be honest. I did not wanna colour my hair. I didn’t wanna damage my hair and didn’t want to keep bleach blonde again but my current boyfriend saw one of my model pictures where I had blonde hair, and he was like, ‘Can you be like that again?’

C: So, did you do it for him?

A: I was like not happening, honey. It’s a process. He was like, ‘I’ll help you. We’ll go to Sally’s. It can’t be too hard. I’ll do it with you.’ So, we go to Sally’s, we let him do the first two treatments and he actually helped me colour my hair. Then three treatments in and I actually fell in love with it. So, everyone’s giving me these compliments saying we love the blonde. He’s all like, ‘I told her to do it.’

C: So, we’re curious. Before filming, did you have to go through hair and makeup or did you do it on your own?

A: I’m glad you asked. Because that’s the first time I’ve been asked this question and no, we did not have hair and makeup on set. We had to get ourselves ready. Sometimes, ten minutes in advance. They’d be like ‘Hey, we’re actually gonna film this now.’ and I’d have to run to the bathroom and do the best that I can in five minutes and then run back and film. We were responsible for our own hair and makeup. There were like touchups, if you needed or if something was messed up, they’d let you know. But we were like responsible.

C: Would you ever give another ultimatum?

A: I did. I told my current boyfriend that if we’re not married or engaged by the end of this year, bye. I think he’s got this. I’m not nervous about it.

C: Would you bring him on season 2?

A: I told him, I said we will go on season 2 or I’m walking out of here. We make jokes about this all the time. We talk about what if you were on the show and how we would be married early in the show.

C: Is there something you’d like to tell your fans who are reading this right now?

I do wanna mention that all those girls out there that are messaging me nothing but inspiring stories, I’ve been in this long relationship and we didn’t want the same things. I decided to demand more, and walk away and I’m so proud of all of you girls who are messaging me and saying this show changed my life for the better and how they finally wanted more for themselves after watching your story. Shoutout to men too who aren’t settling cause they deserve more, who are taking the lead and demanding more. I’m so proud of you, guys.
