Gina Rodriguez, just picked her next role, and it’s playing against type for sure. She’s playing an international criminal who travels the world stealing valuables—but you’ll probably grow to love her anyway.
Deadline reports that Rodriguez is playing Carmen Sandiego—yes, from the old-school video games and TV shows. She’ll play the part for two different Netflix projects: a live-action movie and an animated series.
The news of the animated series was announced last year; she’ll voice Carmen and Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things will voice Player, her “tech-whiz sidekick.” That show, which will have 20 episodes, will air on Netflix in 2019. According to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the publisher who is co-creating the shows, the animated series will “explore her origin story as never before,” so hopefully we’ll figure out what made her turn to a life of crime—and where in the world she got that great red hat.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Rita Moreno, once voiced Carmen for the animated series Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? Back in April, Rodriguez confirmed she was ready to play Carmen, and even had the costume.
I already have the fedora and coat. So it's definitely true. https://t.co/Fg2T6yw8W3

Not much has been revealed yet about the live-action movie, but Deadline reports it will be “a standalone Carmen adventure that will embrace the beloved ‘90s property.” So if they don’t bring back Rockapella to sing the theme song, they’re doing it wrong.
