When a couple gets married, the question on everybody’s lips is ‘so when are you going to have children?’ And for Prince Harry, it’s no different.
On a recent trip to Ireland – his first overseas engagement with Meghan Markle since the couple got married back in May – a woman in the crowd named Elaine Adam-Stewart reportedly said to Harry: “My husband also has red hair and he gave me five children — when are you and Meghan going to get going?”
According to People, Harry laughed and replied, “Five children? — too many.”
So now we know how many kids Harry and Meghan don’t want. And that’s something, right?
Harry has always been open about wanting children, and in the couple’s post-engagement interview with the BBC back in November 2017 he said he and Meghan definitely planned to have children, just “not yet”.
“One step at a time,” Harry said, adding: “We’ll start a family in the near future.”
But for those who think the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might have already got started on the baby-making mission, a photograph taken from their first day in Ireland suggests Meghan probably isn’t pregnant.
In the picture, Meghan and Harry can be seen sipping bubbles at the Summer Party at the British Ambassador in Ireland’s residence. And while that doesn’t guarantee anything – some women quite happily and safely continue to drink a small amount during pregnancy – it does suggest that she might not be with child quite yet.
When the time comes for Meghan and Harry to start a family, only they will be the ones to make the decision about how many children they want to have. But in recent history, members of the Royal Family have opted to have just two children.
Each one of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s four children went on to have two of their own: Prince Charles had William and Harry with Diana, while Princess Anne had Zara and Peter Phillips with her husband, Captain Mark Phillips. Likewise, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson went on to have two daughters – Beatrice and Eugenie – and Prince Edward had Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn with his wife Sophie.
William and Kate broke recent tradition by opting to have a third child, Prince Louis, who was born in April this year.
So who knows how many kids Harry and Meghan will go on to have, but whenever they do, those babies will be blessed with the coolest royal parents in all of the land.
