Having lived in and experienced different countries across the Middle East, Marwa Arif has a unique understanding of the region, its culture and traditions. She has combined this with her entrepreneurial spirit to create a flower boutique — Melia Flowers — that specializes in translating the rich heritage and symbolism of the Arab world into bouquets and hampers, and just how gorgeous are they!? We have truly fallen in love!

Cosmopolitan Middle East: What is it like being the founder of a startup?

Marwa Arif: It’s both exciting and challenging being the founder of a startup. There are so many unknowns and it requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and resilience but at the same time, there’s nothing quite like seeing your vision come to life and making a positive impact on people’s lives.

Cosmopolitan Middle East: What was your inspiration behind Melia Flowers?

Marwa Arif: I wanted to create a brand that would showcase the beauty and heritage of our region through flowers. Our region has so many beautiful things embedded in its culture and traditions, and we strive to bring those elements to life in our floral arrangements. Being from different parts of the Middle East has given me a unique insight into its culture and traditions, and I wanted to showcase that through Melia Flowers. My family is originally from Iraq, has roots in Lebanon, and I am married to a Palestinian-Jordanian and living with my family in the UAE for the past 20 years.

Marwa Arif: Culturally inspired, personalized, and exquisite.

Cosmopolitan Middle East: Starting a business can be pretty daunting, as a founder yourself, what advice would you give to those who are looking at taking the same path?

Marwa Arif: It’s definitely not easy, but I have a supportive family who has been my rock throughout this journey. My advice is to follow your passion, but also do your research and plan accordingly. It’s important to have a solid business plan and a clear understanding of the market and your target audience.
