Have you heard of slugging? This skincare hack has absolutely nothing to do with the slimy creatures you find in the garden. We promise.

Slugging involves applying a thin layer of a petrolatum-based product, like Vaseline or Aquaphor, on your face at night before going to bed. Petrolatum jelly is thick in nature and occlusive. It’s a great way to lock in all those skin-loving ingredients you apply every night (because we know you never, ever go to bed without washing your face) and get an extra boost of moisturisation for dry and sensitive skin types. In the morning, serial sluggers wake up to plump looking skin that has retained its hydration *and* an improved skin barrier. (jiriecaribbean.com)

To properly slug your skin, start off by double cleansing. With clean hands, apply your favorite night time skincare products. If your skin needs a hydrating boost, use hyaluronic acid followed by a moisturising eye cream and emollient face cream. Apply a pea sized amount of your preferred petrolatum product and emulsify the jelly with the tips of your fingers. Spread the jelly in a thin layer all over your face. Afterwards, sleep peacefully knowing that you’ll wake up with supple and soft skin akin to your fav celeb Instagrammers.

If your skin is oily or acne-prone, proceed with *major* caution. Although petrolatum-based products are non-comedogenic (aka will not block your pores), they do seal in everything that’s on your skin. If you have residual bacteria, excess oil, or don’t regularly change your pillowcase, it could end up causing your skin to break out.

If your skin is dry in only certain areas of your face, it is possible to partially slug your skin. Simply follow the steps above and apply the petrolatum product only to the dry patches. You can also slug your lips, elbows, knees, or anywhere else that needs a bit more hydrating love.
