Let’s get real, with all our lotions, serums, powders and masks it can be a lot to think about and when it comes to SPF it needs to be used 365 days a year.
But it can be easy to forget your lips, but does it matter? Well, to be frank, yes it does.
When it comes to protecting our lips from UV rays, using lipstick or lipgloss alone doesn’t cut it.
According to Dr. Radmila Lukian, dermatologist and skin specialist at Lucia Clinic, regularly applying abroad spectrum SPF lip balm is necessary throughout the year. Read on to find out everything you need to know when it comes to protecting your lips from the sun.
Cosmo ME: Do we need to wear SPF on our lips?
Dr. Lukian: Yes, absolutely! Just like the skin on our faces, wearing SPF on our lips is important for protecting them from the harmful effects of the sun. While the skin on our lips is generally more delicate and sensitive, it is still susceptible to burning and damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The thin nature of lip skin and its lower melanin content make our lips more vulnerable to sunburn. Therefore, it’s crucial to protect our lips to prevent sun damage.
C: What are the signs of burnt lips?
Dr. Lukian: Signs of burnt lips may include redness, tenderness, swelling, dryness, peeling, and, in severe cases, blistering. Sunburned lips can be uncomfortable and even painful, causing difficulties in eating, drinking, and talking. It’s important to take steps to soothe and heal burnt lips, such as applying aloe vera gel or a lip balm with moisturizing ingredients.

C: How often do we need to reapply SPF on our lips during the day?
Dr. Lukian: Just like sunscreen for the rest of your body, SPF lip balm should be reapplied throughout the day, especially after eating, drinking, or wiping your lips. The frequency of reapplication will depend on the specific product you’re using, so it’s best to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
As a general guideline, it’s a good idea to reapply every two hours or more frequently if you’re sweating or spending extended periods in direct sunlight. It’s important to wear it year-round because UV radiation can still reach your lips even on cloudy or cold days. Consistent use can help prevent long-term damage, including premature aging, dryness, and the development of skin cancer on the lips.

C: Are there specific ingredients we should look for when purchasing SPF lip balms?
Dr. Lukian: When choosing a protective balm, look for products with broad-spectrum protection, which means they protect against both UVA and UVB rays. It’s also beneficial to select ones with moisturizing ingredients, such as beeswax, shea butter, or hyaluronic acid, to keep your lips hydrated and prevent dryness.
C: Do you have any other lip tips for us?
Dr. Lukian: In addition to wearing SPF on your lips, it’s essential to practice overall sun protection by wearing a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing that covers your skin. Seeking shade during the sun’s peak hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm, can also help reduce your exposure to harmful UV rays. Remember, protecting your lips from the sun is an important part of maintaining healthy skin and reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer
