After months of not being able to get any of our usual hair and beauty treatments (was anyone else shocked at their natural hair colour?), it’s finally now time that we can start venturing back into the beauty chair for a bouncy blow dry and a head of highlights. Still not decided on your summer style? Ruksher Malik, Founder of Pastels Salon in Dubai, has been giving us the low-down on the hair trends which are coming for this summer…
Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise
This is definitely a trend we can get on board with, we love a hair accessory! Bandanas, headbands, barrettes, slides, even a casual tiara, the list of ways to adorn your hair is endless. A strategically placed scarf or bandana has been our friend mid-pandemic to help cover up how long overdue a salon visit is, and lucky for us they are here to stay (also perfect for stealing an extra 10 minutes in bed on a morning too). Ruksher tells us there “were a number of kitschy hair accessories on the Marc Jacobs SS2020 runway, but the ‘70s-inspired faux orchids were amongst the most wearable and fun”. Well, if Marc says so…
Must have products: L’Oreal Tecni Art fix max gel and Kerastase Elixir Ultime to get that work-able texture we can braid and accessorise.
Fringes
Bangs, fringes, whatever you want to call them, we’re gonna be seeing a lot more of them this summer. Bella Hadid’s sweepover fringe and high pony has taken the world by storm, and we are loving it. There are so many types of fringe to experiment with, “whether a Dua Lipa floating-over-the-eyebrow solid number, which has a length and shape that you can play around with, or a microfringe like Maisie Williams that takes inspiration from Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and opens up the face beautifully”, says Ruksher.
Must have products: Kerastase Ciment Thermique créme and L’Oreal Tecni Art Pli Shaper to give shape and memory to that fringe and keep it smooth and sleek.
French girl hair
This is that kind of effortless cool-girl hair, that midi-length or long bob which goes with every look in your closet. Tousled and wavy, this is a really flattering style which is perfect for relaxed summer months. You can simply wash and wear, or add some waves with a wand for volume and shape. Look to Nazly Firas, Hailey Bieber or Rachel Green in series 1 of Friends for inspiration.
Must have products: Redken Pillow Proof Blowdry Primer and Redken Curvaceous Ringlet Shape Perfecting Lotion will give body and direction to your curls and get you an extra day out of your blow dry before hair-wash time.
Low-maintenance colour
We all know a thing or two about roots atm thanks to the *ahem* pandemic, but Ruksher suggests that they will continue to be a trend for the summer, with people choosing colour looks which are more low-maintenance for the the warmer months, such as bronde or a styles with obvious roots. Warm and glossy tones can be some of the most low-maintenance styles, or a long balayage won’t mind a little grown-out action.
Must have products: Kerastase Reflections and Redken Colour Extend Magnetics are great choices for all coloured hair. If, however, you have long hair then nothing beats the Kerastase Extentioniste range.
