There’s no denying that when used correctly and conservatively with a trusted doctor, Botox and fillers are effective for preventing wrinkles and adding volume to specific areas, but did you know they are also regularly employed to decrease the oiliness of your skin?

“Botulinum Toxin (aka BoToX) works with the nerve endings in the skin to change muscle activity,” says Dr Melissa, an Advanced Medical Aesthetic Doctor. “It makes skin appear smoother by relaxing muscles around skin pores and targets the oil gland in pores to reduce their production. Overall, there’s a reduction in sweating and a reduction in oil accumulation.”

Yep, good news for anyone with skin as oily as mine: A few injections to the forehead could decrease oil production enough to calm a shiny T-zone. Where do I sign up?

And that’s not all… “Because of the impact on oil production and sweat glands, some people find that they suffer with less acne in the areas treated, too,” adds Dr Melissa. “Most people have heard about Botox in the context of cosmetic treatments, but it was originally used medically for the treatment of twitching eyelids! The effect on wrinkles in the skin was just a bonus side effect. It can be also used to help with other health issues like chronic migraines, and excessive sweating, and it’s even been used to treat bladder overactivity, helping with continence issues.”

“We also treat the masseter muscle (if you are a nighttime teeth grinder or serial chewing gum user, this can make this muscle overactive); the trapezius muscle to elongate the necklines,  and the depressor muscles near the mouth to help with those resting ‘sad’ faces.”
