“I’m Skeptical.”

I so want to believe that a cute little stone is the key to perfect skin. If it were, I’d buy stock in jade and sleep in a tomb of it every night. But from a scientific standpoint, this is a…rock. A pretty, shiny, roll-y rock. I mean, I get that the history is super legit—“jade rollers have been used in China for centuries to massage the skin,” says Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, founder of Entière Dermatology. And thanks to our general wellness obsession, they’re now seen as magic wands for getting rid of dark circles, smoothing wrinkles, making skin-care products work better, and turning you into Zendaya (dreams). But for me? They just leave my face looking kinda flushed for a few minutes, like I went a wee bit too hard on the tequila sodas. And yes, apparently jade rollers might increase circulation to your skin, but what does that even really mean, you know? (P.S. Another circulation booster: doing 10 jumping jacks or slapping yourself in the face.) Still, life is hard, and if jade rolling makes you happy, don’t stop. But IMO, it isn’t a cure-all. As an ~artsy~ shot for your Insta feed tho? 10/10 would recommend.

“I’m Sold.”

For years I’ve had aestheticians bust out jade rollers to help steamroll puffiness on my face and help my skin absorb whatever magic (fingers crossed) lotions they’d just applied. But it wasn’t until a few months ago that I actually swiped my own jade bb from the Cosmo beauty closet. I promptly stashed it in my fridge next to a bottle of rosé (both are way more enjoyable chilled), but honestly, I didn’t think I’d use it that often. Then I found myself jade rolling almost every morning because it is just so relaxing and makes it look like I might have actually slept a little? (I have a 10-month-old who’s teething, you do that math.) Despite the fact that there isn’t reeeally any research proving its benefits, I *swear* it reduces swelling around my eyes and jawline, like a rolling pin smooths dough. And licensed acupuncturist and herbalist Sandra Lanshin Chiu hears me: “When you move a facial roller from the center of your face outward, it helps kick-start fluid drainage and boosts circulation.” Hard science or not, my face looks like a chiseled statue when I’m finished, so there.

The Takeaway

Alas, not the holy-grail miracle cure you seek, but jade rollers could offer some de-puffing perks, and hey, they def up your fancy quotient. Plus, “when people enjoy something, they’re more likely to stick with it,” says Dr. Levin, “so if facial rolling helps you remember to apply your serum and do your skin-care routine, I’m all for it.”
