There’s some beauty ‘rules’ we’ve always believed to be true but a lot of them are actually urban myths. We sort fact from fiction to make your life easier!
1. Black eyeliner on the inner rim of your eyes can make them look smaller: FACT
Unfortunately, this is a common problem and much as we love this look, it’s something to be very wary of if you have smaller eyes. If you want to add definition to your eyes, use eyeliner on the inside of your upper lid which will add depth without making them look smaller.
2. Getting your hair cut regularly will make it grow more quickly: MYTH
This is a big urban myth. It might feel like its growing faster because shorter hair is fresh and blunt. Lnger hair can get thinner with split ends and more breaks, so it might feel like it’s growing slower. Actually your hair grows at exactly the same rate, day and night, at about half an inch a month
The only time it grows faster is in the summer when your metabolism is faster. So if you want to grow your hair you might have to wait until the sun starts shining!
3. Shaving hair makes it grow back thicker: MYTH
This is another urban myth. In actual fact when you shave your hair it doesn’t grow back any thicker at all. It simply feels that way because when you shave, you cut the hair off in a blunt way, so rather than the soft, tapered feel of natural hair it feels coarser when it grows back. Also, stubble always feels thicker than coarser hair but it’s not actually any thicker at all.
4. Toothpaste can get rid of spots: FACT
This is a great trick that lots of models use. While you shouldn’t be using it everyday, it’s a great quick-fix. If you feel a pimple about to erupt put a tiny bit of toothpaste on the spot overnight (not a good look for the day). There are drying and cooling ingredients in toothpaste (such as peppermint) that are great for treating inflammation.Â
5. Eating chocolate gives you spots: MYTH
There’s no convincing evidence that eating chocolate gives you spots. Everything in moderation though, girls. Having a healthy, balanced diet is great for your skin and eating lots of chocolate will make you fat!
6. You should wash oily skin more frequently: MYTH
If you suffer from oily skin you’re going to really want to wash it a lot more, but try not to. It has been proven that if you wash your face too much your skin thinks that it needs to produce more oil, which will make the problem worse. So if you do have oily skin, try to use a foam or cream cleanser just at night and then splash the face with water in the morning.
7. Drinking caffeine gives you cellulite: NO
Drinking caffeine doesn’t give you cellulite, but if you’re drinking too much tea or coffee it can make any cellulite you already have, worse. Too much caffeine dehydrates the skin cells so it shrinks the skin, making cellulite look worse. So it’s always a good idea to balance your tea and coffee with plenty of water. However putting caffeine on your skin it has a great effect on cellulite. Look for caffeine in a cellulite cream as it helps to reduce stored fat.
8. You shouldn’t use straighteners on wet hair: MYTH
Not all straighteners are bad for wet hair. The Remington Wet2Straight has been specifically designed to use when your hair is wet. It’s got special air vents that take away steam so you can safely straighten your hair when it’s damp, sealing in moisture, making it smoother and taking away the hassle of having to dry it first.
