We hate to say it, but Kim Kardashian single handedly brought chunky highlights back from the dead when she wore them circa two months ago. Before their resurgence, they had been reserved for the 90s: think the Olsen twins, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Kelly Clarkson.
Granted, some of the aforementioned were, at times, quite extreme (did you or did you not witness Buffy’s hair!? Wild), but the 2019 way to do chunky highlights is – thankfully – a little bit less scary. We’ve been deep in balayage for so long now, we’d almost forgotten that hair dye can actually be applied to the tops of our heads lol.
Yes, it can, and will be, if you’re willing to let it. We get it, straying from your natural shade, or trusty dying technique is a BIG step. You love this colour, you’re used to the way it looks and – most importantly – it is low maintenance.
We’re not here to sugar coat it – chunky highlights will involve more upkeep than balayage or dip dyed styles, that’s just the way it goes, we’re afraid. But the pay off is, in our opinion worth it, and after browsing through these 12 cool AF colours we’re confident you’ll agree.
